Marcel Lifetime Achievement Award

The Marcel Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honour bestowed by AFAS. It recognises scholars who have made extraordinary, sustained contributions to African Studies over the course of their careers. Recipients are nominated by the AFAS membership and selected by the Board.

Selection Criteria

  • Distinguished career in African Studies scholarship
  • Significant impact on the field through publications or practice
  • Contributions to mentoring and developing future scholars
  • Recognition by peers as a leader in the field

The Global African Leadership Award celebrates outstanding individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing African development, governance, and global cooperation. This award bridges academia and practice, recognising those who translate knowledge into real-world impact.

  • Contributions to policy, governance, or social development
  • International recognition and influence
  • Commitment to capacity building in Africa

AFAS Medals Award

The AFAS Medals are awarded annually to recognise exceptional research excellence and academic achievement in African Studies. Medals are awarded across multiple categories including early career researcher, best publication, and outstanding contribution to teaching.

Selection Criteria

  • Exceptional research quality and rigour
  • Original contribution to African Studies knowledge
  • Peer-reviewed publications or presentations
  • Early career researchers are strongly encouraged to apply
